Newsday’s Football Player Defeats the Odds in Web Video

Naji Nizam, a senior at Port Jefferson High School, has spent his whole life battling muscular dystrophy. Since he was a child, he was interested in playing football — a sport that his parents said he could never play because of his debilitating disease. Determined to defy the odds, Nizam began playing football during his junior year of high school. This video chronicles his last game as a high school football player, and the journey he has taken to make it this far.

Newsday’s approach to the video made watching it worth while. Though it’s a little over six minutes in length, the video tells a complete story by itself. The b-roll complemented the entire story. The shots of the football team playing and sitting in the locker room, as well as the tight shots of the signs and football helmets, were creative and added to the story in general. Overall, the video tells a story on its own, as you see the struggles Nizam goes through on a daily basis and the steps he took to prove so many people wrong.
